Mozambique's largest natural gas resources are concentrated in Area 1 and Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, which together contain more than 160 Tcf of discovered natural gas resources. These world-class assets form the backbone of the country's LNG strategy and are positioning Mozambique as one of the world's next major LNG exporters.
Area 1, operated by TotalEnergies, hosts the Mozambique LNG project, a two-train onshore liquefaction facility with a production capacity of 13.1 MTPA. Following the improvement of security conditions in Cabo Delgado, the project officially resumed development activities in 2026 after several years under force majeure. Once operational, Mozambique LNG is expected to become one of Africa's largest LNG export facilities while supplying domestic gas to support industrialisation and power generation.
Area 4, operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV)—a consortium led by ExxonMobil, Eni and CNPC continues to advance a phased development strategy combining floating and onshore LNG projects.
Coral South FLNG, operated by Eni, has been producing LNG since 2022, becoming Africa's first ultra-deepwater floating LNG facility. Building on this success, Coral Norte FLNG reached FID in 2025 and is currently under construction. Once commissioned, the second FLNG unit will add another 3.55 MTPA of LNG export capacity while further monetising the Coral reservoir.
The consortium is also advancing the Rovuma LNG project, one of the largest planned LNG developments in Africa. Located at the Afungi LNG Park, the project will initially consist of two onshore liquefaction trains with a combined capacity of 18 MTPA. In 2026, the project entered its final regulatory and commercial preparation phase ahead of an anticipated investment decision, supported by strong long-term global LNG demand and renewed investor confidence in Mozambique's gas sector.
This combination of floating and onshore LNG developments is expected to establish Mozambique as one of the world's leading LNG exporters while creating significant opportunities for economic growth, government revenues and long-term gas monetisation.
