Cameroon holds over 170 billion cubic meters (Bcm) of proven natural gas reserves and has quietly emerged as a trailblazer in Africa’s gas industry. In 2018, it became the first country in Africa—and only the second in the world—to deploy a Floating LNG (FLNG) unit, marking a turning point in offshore gas monetisation on the continent. Yet while Cameroon’s leadership in LNG exports is well established, its domestic gas market is now entering a new phase—one focused on broader energy access, industrial growth, and cleaner fuels.
This transformation is being driven through a strong public-private partnership model, notably between the Government of Cameroon, state-owned SNH, and international investors like Perenco, whose joint efforts have shaped the evolution of the country’s gas economy across power generation, LNG, LPG, and industrial supply.

Cameroon’s early success in gas monetisation came through power generation. In 2013, gas from the SNH-Perenco-operated Sanaga South field began feeding the Kribi Gas Power Station, a 216 MW facility operated by Globeleq. This project—backed by the government and enabled by SNH was a national first, supplying clean, stable baseload power to complement hydropower and improve energy reliability.
The commissioning of the Bipaga gas processing plant, jointly developed by SNH and Perenco, was a key enabler of this project. It created critical midstream capacity for conditioning domestic gas for both power and emerging industrial uses.

Developed through a partnership between SNH, Perenco and Golar LNG, the project enabled the country to monetise its offshore gas resources through LNG exports, generating foreign exchange revenues while positioning Cameroon as a pioneer in floating LNG technology.
Following the expiry of Golar LNG's contract in 2026, the Hilli Episeyo departed Cameroonian waters, bringing the country's first FLNG chapter to a close. Despite this setback, Cameroon continues to pursue the development of its gas sector through the expansion of domestic gas infrastructure, increased gas-to-power capacity and new monetisation opportunities led by SNH and its partners. The Bipaga gas processing plant remains a strategic asset, supplying processed gas and LPG to the domestic market and supporting energy security. LPG recovered from domestic gas processing continues to reduce import dependence and contributes significantly to meeting household cooking gas demand, while the government seeks new solutions to revive LNG exports and unlock future offshore gas developments.

Building on its existing gas infrastructure, Cameroon is accelerating the use of natural gas to support industrialisation and economic diversification. The country's first gas-to-industry connection, commissioned in 2024, continues to supply pipeline gas from the Bipaga gas processing plant to Keda Ceramics through a dedicated 6 km pipeline. The project demonstrates the successful collaboration between SNH, which owns the infrastructure, and Perenco, which supplies the gas, highlighting the growing role of natural gas in strengthening Cameroon's manufacturing sector.
Beyond pipeline supply, Cameroon is seeking to expand gas access to industries located outside the existing network through compressed natural gas (CNG) and other flexible distribution solutions. Led by SNH and Perenco, these initiatives aim to replace diesel in energy-intensive sectors such as cement, mining and manufacturing, while supporting the country's industrialisation agenda, reducing emissions and improving energy affordability. As Cameroon enters a new phase of gas sector development following the departure of the Hilli Episeyo FLNG in 2026, domestic gas utilisation is becoming an increasingly important pillar of its long-term gas monetisation strategy.

Cameroon’s gas sector stands on a solid foundation, thanks to the vision and coordination of the Government of Cameroon, SNH, and private partners like Perenco. However, the expected decommissioning of the Hilli Episeyo FLNG unit in 2026 will close an important chapter in offshore LNG exports unless future capacity is developed. Nonetheless, the outlook remains fundamentally positive. The infrastructure built over the past decade including gas fields, processing plants, pipelines, and power assets can now be leveraged to scale up domestic gas use across industry, households, and transport. With continued collaboration between public institutions and private investors, Cameroon is well positioned to become a regional model for integrated gas monetisation that balances export ambition with national development goals.
